Companies seeking to manage their innovation face a dynamic set of challenges, attitudes and values. The demand for better, cheaper and faster innovation is a dilemma that few companies have successfully overcome. Although the initial impetus for success in many firms comes from engineering breakthroughs, a successful transition to the market requires substantial input from Market.

The management of innovation is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-functional. This course aims to provide an integrative approach in managing market, technological and organisational changes for better innovation and focuses on the challenges companies face when they bring innovation to market. As innovation continues to be at the forefront of economic and political debate about how to improve the competitiveness of economies and firms, this course will give students insight into the problems faced by firms as they try to manage innovation and develop innovative products that will help them survive and prosper.

The main aim of this course is to bring together the areas of innovation management and new product development and to keep a strong emphasis on innovation as a management process. Designed to provide students with insights into the problems of the innovation process the material is applicable to big and small firms alike. There will be strong focus on innovation management, managing technology and knowledge, and new product development, including managing intellectual property, managing R&D projects, open innovation and technology transfer, and new service innovation.
