This course introduces students to the theory and practice of Human Resource Management (HRM) by exploring a number of core issues, such as recruitment and selection, career development, and employee stress and well-being.

Additionally, it offers the opportunity to engage with themes in international HRM.The course will encourage students to critically appraise a variety of practices in both the manufacturing and service sectors, and link their understanding to broader issues facing organisations.

Class discussions will be complemented by relevant films/documentaries, role-playing activities, and may include field observations to reinforce key learning. Students will be able to gain an insight into a range of HRM policies, and critically engage with a number of people-centred activities in business. Specifically, the course will examine key issues and debates in the following areas:

- The role of HRM in organisations

- Recruitment and selection

- Career management by individuals and organisations

- Employee stress and well-being

- The link between HRM and organisational performance

- International issues in HRM

The learning methodologies will include seminar discussions, case studies, relevant films/documentaries, role-playing activities and field observations.

The study of Human Resource Management (HRM) is valuable to anyone who wishes to broaden their understanding of people-centred activities in organisations.

Course aim
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

- Describe the role of HR within organisations;

- Be aware of diverse HR practices and their role in organisations (such as, recruitment and selection, performance management, and job design);

- Understand the changing nature of employment from both employers' and employees perspectives;

- Identify a variety of issues in international HRM (such as the role of national culture in HRM).
