Physical activity decreased in the past decades reflecting increased automation of work and immobilization during leisure time. Physical inactivity has recently been recognized as one of the ten leading risk factors being responsible for about 5% of disability adjusted life years.rnThe precise assessment of physical activity is crucial in health research, but still lacks content knowledge and especially the understanding ofrnhow to choose the suitable instrument for which research setting. Thus, physical activity may be assessed by different methods and instruments. They are generally divided into subjective questionnaire- or diary-based methods and objective instrumental methods like accelerometers or GPS-based analysis. Application and interpretation largelyrndepend on age, size of cohort, prevalent disease, type of exercise and instrument used for the assessment of physical activity.
