In a two-week course, the program facilitates the exchange of ideas and cooperative projects among mediation scholars, practitioners, trainers, and students in the East and West. In addition to providing an introduction to mediation, it provides a teaching and training template for scholars and practitioners from around the world to adapt for use in their home countries.
Through lecture, discussion, demonstration and role-plays, students will be introduced to mediation and facilitation theory and skills and examine the impact of culture and context on the consensus-building approach adopted. The course also will examine a variety of strategies to foster and support democratic and constructive dialogue. The interactive presentation of the material is designed to offer teaching and training models to those course participants who want to develop programs in their own countries. Participants should come prepared for a highly engaging learning experience.
Participants who have the means and ability to teach and train in transition countries will be given preference for acceptance.Case examples will focus on both civil and criminal mediation models and scenarios from both the United States and Central and Eastern Europe, including efforts in Central and Eastern Europe to promote meaningful democratic dialogue in times of crisis involving high-conflict situations and inter-ethnic tensions.

Target group
In addition to American law students pursuing the J.D. degree, the program encourages applications from junior and middle career faculty as well as graduate students and professionals in law, social science, public administration, psychology, social work, public policy, political science, government and labor relations from emerging democracies worldwide.
While this is an introductory course for mediation and facilitation theory and skills, it is offered not only for students wanting such an introduction, but also for mediation teachers and professionals who want to examine theories of mediation and the structure of a mediation training. Applicants from emerging democracies worldwide who are interested in developing their own teaching or training curriculum will be given preference for acceptance.
Undergraduates without a university degree will not be considered. Course aim
Mediation is a newly emerging field in both the west and the east. Legislation mandating the use of mediation has outpaced the development of both theory and practice, and this course is designed in part to fill that gap, cultivating scholars, teachers, trainers, and practitioners in this developing and important arena.

0.0 ECTS creditsThe "Mediation and Other Methods to Foster Democratic Dialogue" course is offered for professional development for academics and practitioners. Those who wish to obtain credits that count toward their degree should consult their home institution in advance whether the CEU SUN course can be accepted for credit transfer. The CEU Summer University Office will be able to provide all course documentation, such as course description, syllabus, reading list, etc. upon request.
Course fee
EUR 550: Tuition fee (550 EUR) is due by May 9, 2011.The tuition fee includes participation in the summer course, some administrative costs, an orientation program and welcome pack, access to the CEU Library and IT facilities, reading materials, printing quota.
EUR 500: Early Bird fee is available for tuition payment made before April 30, 2011.
