1. The palaeography seminars provide practical training in Latin and Greek palaeography at an intermediate level, focusing on transcribing various scripts across broad chronological and geographic areas and dealing with issues such as recognition of script and dating of hand. Seminars will run in three parallel options: Latin book hand, Latin diplomatic hand and Greek book hand. Students will have the possibility to combine the two Latin options.
2. The lectures on codicology and diplomatics complement and contextualize the practice of the intensive transcription seminars.
3. A one-day workshop offers an opportunity for discussion based on brief thematic lectures given by the faculty and invited speakers. The theme selected for the focus of the workshop is the layout of manuscripts and documents and the cognitive aspects of book and document production that lies behind the layout. The workshop will explore what a close look at folio layouts of manuscripts and of documents can tell us about medieval writing, reading and communication practices, covering the period from the 6th to the 15th centuries.
4. Visits to manuscript holding libraries and archives will complement the course to facilitate contact with original material.
5. A practical palaeography test on the last day will serve as a way to test the knowledge acquired during the course. The test will include the transcription of a Latin or Greek text (xeroxed facsimile), recognition of script, the description of the characteristics of the script, approximate dating of hand, brief summery of content.

MA and PhD students and young researchers are invited to apply. Pre-requisites: Working knowledge of Latin and/or Greek and elementary knowledge of Latin and/or Greek palaeography (proof of transcript or exam) are required.
Course aim
The aim of the one-week course is to provide practical training in the basic skills of Latin and Greek palaeography, combined with codicological and diplomatic lectures based on a new approach toward manuscript studies and the latest trends in research. The course includes a one-day workshop on manuscript and document layouts and the cognitive processes they reflect, complemented by visits to manuscript holding libraries and archives.

1.0 ECTS creditsThe "Medieval Codicology and Palaeography" course offers 1 ECTS point, which may be accepted for credit transfer by the participants' home universities. Those who wish to obtain these credits should inquire about the possible transfer at their home institution prior to their enrollment. The Summer University Office will send a transcript to those who have fulfilled all the necessary course requirements and request one.
Course fee
EUR 300: Tuition fee (300 EUR) is due by May 28, 2011.The tuition fee includes participation in the summer course, some administrative costs, an orientation program and welcome pack, access to the CEU Library and IT facilities, reading materials, printing quota, and some social activities.
EUR 270: Early Bird fee (300 EUR) is available for tuition payment made before April 30, 2011.
