In this course, linguistic variation across human languages is studied from two comparative perspectives: a micro-comparative perspective and a macro-comparative one. In the first part of the course students are introduced into the field of macro variation (or language typology), the systematic study of the similarities and differences between the world's more than 5000 natural languages.
It searches for universal properties or systematic patterns of variation in morphological or syntactic aspects of languages, and to classify variation along genetic, areal or structural lines. The second part of the course focuses on the study of micro variation - the study of language systems that are very similar, such as closely related languages, or dialects of the same language. We will look at micro variation from a syntactic point of view, and discuss the relevance of phenomena such as syntactic dialect variation for linguistic theory.
