Migration has made European countries ethnically and culturally more diverse. Host populations have to adapt to migrants and their religion and culture, while migrants have to find their way in a new and sometimes aversive environment. Acceptance and adaptation have to be realised by migrants in spite of initial resistance, possible social exclusion and explicit political rejection by part of the host population.
This course introduces students to basic sociological and social psychological theories and research on the reception and adaptation of migrants in European host countries. The approach is analytical and empirical and focuses on processes of group perception, stereotyping, group identification, political mobilization, economic and cultural integration and ethnic conflict.

Target group
The course is designed for students in the social sciences interested in a non-descriptive, research oriented approach to the consequences of migration. It is relevant for undergraduate students in social sciences (e.g., sociology, social psychology, political science, anthropology economics,) and students aiming at continuing with (research) master courses in sociology, social psychology, or migration and ethnic relations.
Course aim
Based on readings, presentations and class discussions, students will build up (a) an overview of the main research questions, theories, and empirical findings on international migration, integration, and ethnic relations, (b) knowledge of datasets and understanding of research methods that are commonly used in this field, (c) ability to critically evaluate empirical research, (d) ability to apply this knowledge to new problems within this field. This ability includes generating new research questions, using specific theory to elaborate research questions and formulating hypotheses.
