The course will introduce students into various theories including, cumulative causation, world system theory, social capital, macro and micro push and pull, network theory. It will provide basic data on historical developments and links to major macro social changes.
It will discuss major policy dilemmas including immigration and integration, free trade and migration, fertility decline versus immigration, development and emigration. It will also allow students to gain some insight into methodological issues and how the perspectives of migrants can be revealed. The course will be based on interactive work with the students and they will also do some statistical analysis concerning their own countries.

Course aim
The course will introduce students into the main currents of migration studies and its relationship toward some major sociological ideas and theories. It will also allow students to gain insight into main dilemmas concerning migration policy and the relationship between migration and development.
