Information systems are central to the operations, management, and competitive position of all organizations. Today, however, these systems are changing dramatically with the ever increasing use of mobile technology that allows users to interact with the systems anyplace and anytime.
This course introduces information systems and technology but with an emphasis on the use of mobile devices and applications in these systems. The overall objective of this course is to prepare the students to be informed users of mobile information systems in their personal and work lives. Target group
No previous background in information systems and technology, either fixed or mobile, is required for this course. The course only assumes that the students are familiar with personal computers and mobile phones from an end-user perspective, and that the students are comfortable using the internet and the web. The course includes lectures covering fundamental concepts about information systems and technology. The course does not require any technical expertise in information technology. Some optional technical topics are presented for those students who are interested but an understanding of these topics is not required for the project or exam.
Course aim
Upon completing this course the student will be able to:1. Describe from an end-users perspective the fundamental information technology used in enterprise information systems2. Describe in a general way the technology used in mobile information systems3. List common mobile applications4. Explain the characteristics that distinguish mobile application from fixed applications5. Explain the characteristics and functions of mobile commerce and distinguish it from fixed electronic commerce6. Explain the functions, components, and common types of enterprise information systems 7. Describe how mobility impacts common enterprise information systems8. Describe the process of developing mobile applications and information systems9. Identify security concerns in mobile information systems10. Speculate on the future of wireless and mobility
