The literature on globalisation has emphasised the notion that the world is getting smaller and smaller, but the various mobilities through which globalisation is constituted reveal a much more complex pattern than simply a shrinking world or global village. Furthermore, different kinds of mobilities connect the world in different ways. This programme will explore how different kinds of mobilities, and the interconnections between them, shape places, development trajectories and livelihood possibilities in distinct ways.

Examples of these intersecting mobilities include migration, commodities (trade), money (global financial markets, foreign direct investments, remittances), policy mobilities, collective action (social movements), information (information and communications technologies), and biophysical processes (water, climate). A special focus will be put on the methodological aspects of this body of research. A number of sessions will be devoted to research design and to develop, in particular, innovative relational comparative methodologies that will be useful in understanding issues pertaining mobilities and development in our increasingly interconnected world.

The course will begin with a few lectures that introduce the key conceptual, empirical and methodological issues in the field. Course participants are then invited to share their research ideas, experiences, methods, challenges and concerns. Each of the workshops will be moderated by experienced researchers in the field from IDS at Utrecht University, the Department of Geography at The University of California (Los Angeles), among others.
