Ticks and tick-borne diseases affect animal and human health worldwide. Tick identification and molecular recognition of pathogens in ticks are key elements in disease outbreak investigations and field surveys. In this intensive practical laboratory course of 2 weeks students perform PCR combined with Reverse Line Blot (RLB) hybridization.
RLB is a robust technique, wherein up to 40 different tick-borne pathogens can be detected simultaneously. This technique allows for the discovery of novel pathogens. The program me includes a field trip to collect ticks, training how to design field surveys and highlighted by several international guest lectures.

Target group
Advanced MSc students with the ambition to embark on PhD research related to ticks and tick-borne diseases and for PhD students to support their ongoing research on ticks and tick-borne diseases.
Course aim
Each student will have gained knowledge on tick taxonomy, field survey design, molecular recognition of pathogens transmitted by ticks, interpretation of laboratory results and phylogenetic analysis of tick-borne pathogens.
