The fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology depend on materials with critical dimensions in the nanometre range. Examples include organic macromolecules, inorganic catalyst particles, and size-quantized metal and semiconductor structures. The properties of these materials depend on the size and shape of the nanoparticles and their ordering in 2-D and 3-D structures.


Nanomaterials find applications in a wide range of fields such as device technology (nanophotonics, solar energy conversion, opto-electronics), medicine (sensors, labelling) and chemical synthesis (catalysis). In the course students will be introduced to the exciting interdisciplinary field of nanoscience, its chemical and physical aspects, and its many applications. The school will combine theory (lectures, tutorials) with experiment, laboratory tours and a visit to an industrial research laboratory.

Target group
Advanced bachelors with a background in chemistry, physics or materials science as well as proficiency in English. Applicants will go through a selection procedure. Maximum number of participants: 30

Course aim
To introduce the student to: the design and synthesis of nanomaterials; the characterization of their physical and chemical properties and phenomena; their applications.
