One of the most remarkable features of the human species is the capacity for sharing meaning. We are by far the best communicators around. So what is it about our brains that make us so? The aim of the summer school is to provide a select group of advanced PhD students and beginning postdocs with an in-depth overview of cognitive neuroscience research on communicative meaning.

How does the brain store and retrieve word meaning? Which neural systems are involved in constructing phrase-level meaning? How do readers or listeners move beyond the code, and recover speaker meaning? What are the neural mechanisms required to deal with text or conversation?

How do systems that handle the linguistic code interact with those involved in affect, mentalizing, and recognizing social actions? Five leading researchers in the field -- Friedemann Pulvermuller, Liina Pylkkanen, Ira Noveck, Evelyn Ferstl, Ivan Toni -- will take up these questions.
