Future non-profit managers need to understand how non-profit/cultural policy is developed and exercised, and how it is changing in the context of new cultural agendas, Europeanization and the growth of global cultural industries.
The course complements students' operational understanding of non-profit/cultural industries and management by providing a conceptual and institutional context for strategic decision-making. The course takes a broad definition of non-profit organizations. We will include the arts, popular culture, cultural identity, theatres, museums and heritage, as well as industries such as film, music, broadcasting, and publishing but also scientific institutions and universities.
Period
17-07-2013 - 14-08-2013 (4 weeks)

Bachelor's students
Course aim
Students will
1) analyze and evaluate the roles of, and relationships between, non-profit promotion and funding at regional, national and supra-national levels in relation to private and public sector activity. They will learn how to apply tools they know from the for-profit sector to the non-profit sector and thus deepen their3understanding of organisational development.
2) distinguish and discuss notions of culture, cultural intervention and policy in relation to the democratisation and/or commercialisation of culture/define new ways of financing cultural and non-profit institutions due to a decrease in public funding
3) compare and contrast national models of cultural policy, considering the impact on them of European-level policy making
4) analyse and evaluate links between cultural policy and economic and urban policies
5) discuss how specific messages might be constructed to reach defined audiences/prepare a marketing and fundraising strategy for an existing non-profit organisation
By the end of the course students will have a deeper insight in the non-profit sector and will be able to bring in their knowledge in different types of non-profit organisations.
