The course will deal with the practical aspects of planning and executing astronomical observations with high-resolution spectrographs, and subsequently the aspects of data-analysis. During the course hands-on experience with each of these aspects will be obtained with the use of the Stellar Observations Network Group telescope (SONG) on Tenerife.

Course aim
When the course is finished the student is expected to be able to:

- Plan and design a spectroscopic observing programme based on a set of scientific requirements.

- Describe methods for the determination of ultra-precise radial velocities (ThAr and iodine methods).



- Describe basic steps needed in the data-reduction of echelle spectra obtained with a cross-dispersed spectrograph and perform data analysis using the data-reduction software.

- Describe and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of spectroscopic observations for deriving stellar properties.

EUR 0: Students on a bilateral exchange programme do not have to pay. Freemovers are obliged to pay participation fees while tuition fees only apply to freemovers from countries outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
