In the Organic Chemistry Lab, you will receive practical training in organic synthesis. You will synthesize several interesting compounds of increasing complexity and gain experience with various synthesis, separation and purification techniques. You will not only become more skilled in conducting organic reactions, but also gain hands-on experience with analytical equipment such as IR, NMR, GC-MS and HPLC. While you will perform all experiments yourself, some of them will be carried out in groups on slightly different substrates so that general aspects and trends can be discussed afterwards. You will also strengthen your academic communication skills by keeping a journal, discussing reactions with fellow-students and briefly presenting your results. Significant attention will be paid to safely working with chemicals throughout the course.Experiments and analyses will be carried out in the modern educational laboratories of Radboud University Nijmegen. A guided tour through our world-class research facilities is part of the programme.

Period
04-08-2014 - 08-08-2014 (1 weeks)

Target group
This course is particularly suited to students who wish to enter a masters course in chemistry, but have had little opportunity to develop their experimental skills during the bachelors programme. Furthermore, there are ample opportunities to become more experienced with state-of-the-art analytical facilities

Course aim
After this course you will be able to: 1. Design, plan and perform organic synthetic experiments in an independent manner2. Operate specific analytical and spectroscopic instruments independently3. Collect appropriate experimental procedures from the available chemical literature4. Assess the risks involved in doing chemical experiments and take the proper precautions
