The theology of Origen of Alexandria is very important for understanding early Christianity. Understanding Origen's theology is thus a key to the understanding of second and third century theology as a whole. In addition to that Origen has had an immense influence on later theological traditions. He has used almost all relevant literary genres and treated all theological topics. It is difficult and demanding to study Origen - but the payoff is huge.
The objective of this course is to reach a comprehensive understanding of the time, the texts and the theology of Origen of Alexandria. The course will be taught by associate professor Anders-Christian Jacobsen, Aarhus University and include lectures by several young promising Origen-scholars from different European countries. Course aim
The objective of this course is to reach a comprehensive understanding of the time, the texts and the theology of Origen of Alexandria. During the course we will seek answers to questions such as: How does Origen's texts and theology reflect his context (chronological, geographical, literary, and philosophical)? How are the literary expressions of his theology (literary genres)? What is the main topics of his theology (God, creation, Man in relation to God and the world, christology, soteriology, eschatology).
