How do you create authentic looking clothing from another age? This course gives you a fascinating and practical insight into the techniques used to recreate period female dress for film or stage. You'll learn the process of costume for performance, developing your practical skills and knowledge of this specialist subject. We will guide you through the process of making a 19th century corset.

As well as practical skills, you'll learn how the corset changed the shape of the female body and how styles of dress changed through the Victorian era. You'll develop skills in cut and manipulation of fabric as you create a series of 19th century female sample outfits on a mannequin. Under expert guidance you'll discover how to cut bodices, sleeves and skirts as well as applied accessories and trimmings. Visit renowned costume collections

You will make several daytrips to important costume collections that compliment your studio work. You will study original period pieces, have access to original garments and meet specialists who will talk about garment construction techniques and design. A well-equipped studio and extensive library

Our open plan costume studio is equipped with industry standard cutting and designing tables to work on. You'll have access to industrial sewing machines, over lockers and steam presses, as well as specialist cutting equipment. You will also be able to use our extensive library with books on all aspects of period costume.rnrn

Target group
This course is open to all international and UK students aged 17 or over at the time of taking the course. Aimed at students or freelance creatives who wish to upskill and learn techniques in the construction of period garments to enhance their understanding and improve their practical skills.rnrnSome sewing experience is required in order to make the most out of this course.

Please note our tuition fee includes all materials used within the course, teaching costs, plus transport and admission fees for any day trips or study excursions that take place as part of your course.

GBP 120: AUB Accommodation

Accommodation is available to Summer students for 120 per week.

These are 2 halls of residence on our university campus, just 2 minutes walk from our teaching areas. There are single study bedrooms with private en-suite shower room and toilet. Each floor has several large communal kitchens equipped with all appliances and equipment for you to use. There are laundry facilities within each building, payphones, lockable storage lockers and secure swipe key systems to enter the building. Our campus is patrolled 24 hours a day by our onsite security team
