Finance is a key area of any modern economy and the efficient allocation of money and financial instruments is essential to maximise growth and increase wealth.Why are the financial sectors of different regions essentially different in spite of seemingly being similar?

In which ways do the goals of diverse players in financial markets differ? Studying the international political economy of finance in one of the world's most important financial centres, this course will explore these and related questions, helping you analyse and understand the role that the financial sector plays in capitalist economies.

On this course, you'll explore how modern finance really works. You'll gain knowledge of the role that finance plays in modern economies, the variety of actors involved in financial markets, the different types of financial sectors that exist across capitalist economies, and the rationale and evolution of financial regulatory frameworks.We'll ask what explains the increasing power of financial capital from the 1980s onwards and their effects. We'll examine how private companies and governments interact in financial markets, and consider the ways finance will evolve in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis.

You will study and analyse the fundamentals of how politics and economics interact to shape financial markets in different regions across the world. Lectures will cover three broad topics: the role of a variety of governments and international institutions in shaping and regulating financial markets, the rationale behind the behaviour in financial markets of different private and state-owned actors, and the potential effects in the financial sector of the Global Financial Crisis. Seminars will be used to discuss and analyse lecture content through the use of a wide range of materials published by governments, international institutions and private corporations.

This course is ideal for students and professionals who want to work or currently work in the financial sector, and who want to gain a deeper understanding of how politics and economics affect each other in this sector.

Course aim
You will develop an understanding of how modern finance works. In particular, the course aims for you to gain knowledge of the role that finance plays in modern economies, the variety of actors involved in financial markets, the different types of financial sectors that exist across capitalist economies, and the rationale and evolution of financial regulatory frameworks.Level five is usually set at the equivalent of second year undergraduate so there may be an expectation of the students knowledge and skills in the particular area of study. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure they meet these expectations for any level 5 courses offered as part of the Summer School.
