Nationalism has been one of the most significant ideologies influencing European politics during the past two centuries. The different colors on the map designate political units that bear the name of a nation. Today nationalism is increasingly challenged by global and local pressures and in Europe by supranational integration.
However, nation remains an important political category, and without an understanding of nationalism, it would be impossible to analyze many contemporary political processes. How does nationalism affect the process of European integration? What is the relation between immigration, cultural diversity, and European neo-nationalism? Why nationalistic rhetoric that seems blatant to outsiders is acceptable in others? Why the relocation of a historical statue can trigger off riots that ravage cities? How can nation-states manage national pluralism within their borders?
The course offers an in-depth presentation of the main research traditions and approaches in the study of nationalism and shows how they can be applied in concrete case studies. Lectures cover a wide area both in terms of research traditions and geographical coverage. They demonstrate how nationalism affects the international politics as well as everyday life of people in different corners of Europe.Designed for the Bachelor's and Master's level students of humanities and social sciences, the course consists of lectures (28 hours), obligatory reading (the set book list will be distributed in the spring of 2010 and before the course students will be given 2-3 articles or other texts to read), workshops and excursions (12 hours), and a final written exam.
Lectures are scheduled for morning time; whereas workshops and excursions are arranged in the afternoons. Grading is based on active participation in class discussions, workshops, and excursions as well as on the final written exam. Upon the successful completion of the course, the student will be awarded six ECTS credits.The course lecturers - from Finland and abroad - are specialists on nationalism: their research findings have been published in leading international forums and in their target regions.
Their expertise ranges from politics and international law to history and comparative religion.The course also includes one day excursion to Tallinn. Tickets are not included in the course fee: they cost approximately %8060.
