Primary health care is alive and kicking! There is no field within medical studies that offers such a diverse, vibrant and attractive career. Primary health care is a direct reflection of our society and of changes within our society. An ageing population, mounting healthcare costs and technological advancements threaten the sustainability of the contemporary healthcare system. Primary care can offer solutions to these changing demands that hospital-based care cannot. As a possible future general practitioner you are a vital part of these developments.The Radboud University Medical Center has a long tradition of offering research, teaching and vocational training opportunities to (specialised) primary care students. Our Department Of Primary And Community Care offers a unique and extensive network of primary healthcare facilities and institutions. Are you interested in the practice and science of primary care? This course will provide you with all the knowledge you need! And more: throughout the course, we will cover the form, function and philosophy of primary care and gain insight into the most common research methods employed in this field. You will meet several primary care physicians who will discuss the latest development in their field of expertise. And who wouldn't want to visit an academic primary care facility, a nursing home for the elderly or a mental healthcare facility and learn on site?Primary care in perspectivePrimary healthcare plays a crucial and successful role in the unique Dutch healthcare system. General practitioners often form life-long relationships with their patients and treat the vast majority of health problems without referring to hospitals. They have intimate knowledge of the context of their patients and utilise this knowledge to provide patient-centred care. The Dutch primary healthcare system helps to improve the integration of healthcare services, ensuring more sustainable and less invasive patient care and preventing unnecessary hospital admissions. The Radboud University Medical Center is a strong partner in implementing such successful examples of new care modes. Did you know that the Netherlands is the only country that offers chronic care for older patients with complex multimorbidity directly in the community itself? And we have more primary care specialists with extensive knowledge of certain patient groups on offer. They include physicians for the mentally challenged, public health doctors and occupational health doctors. Wow. You can be one of those!

After this course you will be able to:1. Describe the basic principles of primary care medicine2. Describe current developments in several primary care specialties, in organisation and theoretical terms3. Assess the quality of methods commonly used in primary care research4. Discuss the role of primary care in sustainable healthcare systems
