This course is meant as a basic introduction into the field of psycholinguistics. Topics covered will be syntactic and semantic processing (perception and production), aphasia, and first and second language acquisition.
In this course the study of psychological mechanisms underlying language structure and language use will be introduced:
- Day 1 - Introduction What is (psycho) linguistics, who are the psychos studying linguistics and why do they do it?
- Day 2 - First language acquisition How come children learn the properties of their first language so quickly and effortlessly?
- Day 3 - Language production and processing How do we go from the intended to spoken message? And the other way around - how do we process spoken/written language?
- Day 4 - Language breakdown How does brain damage disturb language (focus on aphasia)?
- Day 5 - Neuroimaging How do we look for language inside a healthy brain?
