Psychological trauma (or traumatic stress) and dissociation are concepts of increasing importance in our complex and violent world. In this seminar, we will discuss various ways in which the concepts of psychological trauma and dissociation have been used and understood over the past few decades, and implications of these concepts for understanding and treating various forms of mental disorder.
The course begins with a historical overview of the relevance of trauma and dissociation to an understanding of psychology and psychopathology, followed by a consideration of the impact on the functioning of the brain. The prevalence and significance of childhood trauma, particular with regard to its impact on the developing brain and as a risk factor for subsequent mental disorders will also be addressed.Course offered by Department of Psychology, AU.
