Qualitative methods have attracted wide appeal within the health disciplines because of their capacity to capture the complexity and context that are not amenable to quantitative approaches. Because the methodological tradition underlying most conventional qualitative approaches derives from the social sciences, many health researchers have struggled to find applications that are relevant, rigorous, and true to the nature of the phenomena about which they are concerned.

In this course, which assumes a basic grounding in research methodology, we will consider evolving trends in methodological applications that situate qualitative projects within an evidence-informed, knowledge transfer-oriented health science culture.

Course aim
In this course, participants will be introduced to the history and tradition of qualitative methodology within nursing and health and to evolving trends in methodological application in order to situate method within the larger context of an evidence-informed knowledge transfer imperative. They will be supported in developing the foundational skills required to design and conduct qualitative studies guided by disciplinary logic, and introduced to the resources available for ongoing guidance as they work through each phase of the research process in their future studies.

Scholarships
US Doctoral students can apply for a travel grant. The beneficiaries of the Think Swiss travel grant receive a sum of CHF 800 to cover (part of) travel and accommodation costs. In addition the course fee will be waived.
