The focus of this course is to introduce students to the specialized field of hand therapy. This course is designed to provide a deeper understanding of hand anatomy, hand movement patterns, common pathologies, and common treatment programs. For those interested in pursuing a career in hand therapy this course will provide an excellent foundation. For others, it will provide a solid base of knowledge for those occasional 'hand patients'.

Third and fourth year students or recent graduates physiotherapy and occupational therapy interested in handtherapy.
Course aim
Aim of course: Upon completion, the participant will be able to:. Understand the anatomy of the hand, especially as it relates to hand pathology.. Understand wound healing principles.. Understand the proper procedures of a thorough hand evaluation including measurements of ROM, strength, edema, sensibility and proper documentation.. Discuss the etiology, pathology and clinical treatment of common hand and wrist injuries/diseases including a.o. tendon injuries, nerve injuries, fractures, wrist instability and CMC 1 arthrosis.. Describe exercise techniques and equipment used in hand therapy.. Be able to select and prioritize treatment options and develop effective home programs.. Be able to identify appropriate static and dynamic splints for the treatment of various problems (including splint wearing schedule, indications and contra-indications).
