The course offers a chronological survey of Russian Contemporary art from 1960s to the present time, including contemporary trends and ideas in the ever-changing world of art. This course introduces the visual arts and explains the role they have played in Russian art history, using examples of painting, installations, architecture, environments and performances.
The course combines proper historical methods with an emphasis on the unique position and role played by the artist and the work of art in this accounting period. Special attention is given to interpretation of an art work based upon its social and political context. As a survey course, the material is approached as an introduction to the discipline.
