Serious Gaming for Disaster Resilience

The DRL Summer School 2014 is hosted by the Tilburg Sustainability Center and affiliated to the ISCRAM Association. This course is centered around a serious game to create the impact and experience that is essential for individual and organizational learning to improve resilience, without actually being confronted with a natural or man-made hazard.The program of this course consists of in-depth lectures, case workshops, dinner talks, an augmented reality serious game, as well as a great social program. All lectures are taught by experienced international experts in the areas of humanitarian information management, serious games, humanitarian action, disaster response, and information systems. The participants work in small groups and interact with the lecturers throughout the course.All participants will actively participate in the preparation, design, play, and evaluation of the game. We invite PhD students and practitioners to contribute to (i) the development of the game, and/or (ii) the design, development and evaluation of tools and technologies that can be used to create resilience during the game.

Target group
The Summer School targets PhD candidates who are at any stage of their dissertation as well as early to mid-career practitioners working in the areas of serious games, information systems, and crisis and disaster response.

Course aim
This year the Disaster Resilience Lab (DRL) Summer School on Serious Gaming for Disaster Resilience aims to provide participants with an intense interactive learning experience on use and management of information for sense-making and supply chain management in humanitarian crises. Lectures will introduce students to aspects of disaster resilience, game design and play, as well as the design, use, and evaluation of information systems in humanitarian crisis response.
