An incident in the news: a sudden gust of wind blows away the big tent in which a pop concert is about to begin. One of the fans uses his smartphone to record the scene right after it happens, and interviews two eyewitnesses, who are still a bit traumatised by the event.

The material makes it onto the national TV news programme, because it is authentic and newsworthy. It shows that everyone with a smartphone can be a potential news reporter; but you can also use it for a video story about a trip to the beach, a party, what you and your friends got up to during a concert. Or just a funny video to say hi to your friends on YouTube or Facebook. The emphasis will be on 'learning by doing' putting basic theoretical principles into practice.

There will be assignments using your own smartphone to record pictures and sound and combine them using simple editing software, adding music and narration.These will be followed by feedback sessions in which the participants and the lecturer will identify examples of good practice as well as points for improvement. You will be expected to work both individually and in small teams.Part of the course will be conducted at the premises of RNTC in Hilversum using its professional media facilities and equipment.

RNTC is the international training centre of Radio Netherlands Worldwide, the Dutch International Broadcaster (www.rntc.nl).Important: FOR THIS COURSE YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN SMARTPHONE WITH YOU (NOT MORE THAN ONE YEAR OLD).Preparation: look around for examples of 'Smarthphone Reporting' and bring them with you; think about what you expect from the course and what you hope to do as a 'Smartphone Reporter'.

Course aim
In this course you'll learn through practical exercises and assignments how to tell your story, how to make attractive pictures, strong sound bites and then edit them into an effective whole. All on your smartphone!
