This Summer School builds on the outstanding methodological expertise available at CEU (departments of International Relations, Political Science, and Public Policy). The summer school offers a portfolio of courses, under the common rubric of 'social science research methods', which would be available either online or in a blended format (online module + face-to-face short course in Budapest). Application is encouraged from all over the world.
The summer school offers an integrated research design and methods training to help students and faculty develop their projects and receive the training they need to execute them. This entails offering a set of sub-courses designed to deliver methodological training in an innovative manner relying in large part on online teaching platforms. The Case Study course is designed to assist all researchers who have obtained PhD candidacy status. Operationally, this means that they have passed their qualifying exams in a PhD program. This course is also designed to assist students as they prepare to embark on PhD field research, or are beginning or in the process of writing their dissertation.
This course is also designed to help more advanced scholars who would like more training in how to select cases, design and conduct case research, analyze the findings of their research, and write up findings of their case analysis. Although most useful for advanced PhD students and early career scholars, it may therefore be helpful for scholars who are at more advanced stages of their careers. This course is designed to assist researchers in social sciences broadly defined.
Although it is most geared toward political science (especially comparative politics and international relations) scholars, it will also be relevant to students in the fields of sociology, social psychology, anthropology, nationalism studies, gender studies, education sciences, geography, and political economy. The Set Theoretic Method course is for scholars from a broad range of social science disciplines. Advanced MA students, PhD students, and faculty interested in broadening their methodological tool box will profit from this course even if they will not use the methodology very often. Learning about this method will force participants to think (again) about fundamental issues in empirical social research and to re-evaluate the assumptions behind the methods they usually use, be those statistical techniques or more qualitative approaches.
The Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) course invites application from Anyone with a solid knowledge of regression analysis who wish to take their knowledge beyond into the real of Structural Equation Modeling and wish to apply the method to their research. The course can be useful for anyone from early career graduate student to late career researchers with these goals.Pre-requisitesPlease check the course websites.Language requirementThe language of instruction is English, thus all applicants have to demonstrate a strong command of spoken and written English to be able to participate actively in discussions at seminars and workshops.

This course offers 1 ECTS credit for online phase only and 2 ECTS credits for taking both the online and the phase-to-phase courses.Our courses offer ECTS points, which may be accepted for credit transfer by the participants' home universities. Those who wish to obtain these credits should inquire about the possible transfer at their home institution prior to their enrollment. The Summer University Office will send a transcript to those who have fulfilled all the necessary course requirements and request one.
