Using state-of-the-art software development tools, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to object-oriented specification, design and model-based development using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Java.


An interactive, hands-on course, you'll be taught the graphical notations of UML class diagrams and use cases by one of the originators of model-based development, together with their corresponding executable equivalents in Java. We'll also use a game-played programme and a student data system to examine the use of UML to specify and design software systems.You'll complete this intensive course with a strong understanding of the principles of model-based development, knowledge of key elements of UML class diagram and use case notation, how UML and Java are related, and the ability to use UML class diagrams and use cases to specify simple systems.

To make the most of this course, you should have some introductory level knowledge of software programming languages, such as Java, C# or C++.The key features of this course include:- Being taught UML and model-based development using state-of-the-art technologies.- Being taught by one of the originators of model-based development.- The interactive hands-on approach.

This course will be taught in three parts.

Part 1: Principles of model-based development, motivations for development based on modelling; introduction to case studies.

Part 2: Introduction to UML class diagram notation and use case notation, examples of specification using UML, relationship of UML to Java, principles of specification modelling.

Part 3: Software design and development using UML models, synthesis of software in Java from UML models.

Each part corresponds to approximately one week. Lab sessions will be used for parts two and three, involving practical use of model-based development tools to draw UML models and automatically synthesise software.

Course aim
This course gives an introduction to object-oriented specification and design and model-based development using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Java. The graphical notations of UML class diagrams and use cases are explained, together with their corresponding executable equivalents in Java. Two examples are used to illustrate the use of UML to specify and design software systems: a game-playing programme, and a student data system. The course will involve practical exercises using state-of-the-art software development tools.
