The one-week Summer School will consist of: - Attendance of Key Note speakers conference 'Solidarity and Togetherness' organised by themegroup Sustainable Societies, History/ICOG; - Plenary lectures, followed by group discussions; - Seminars, coordinated by senior researchers and with participation of guest speakers; - Specific training in working with premodern and modern sources, in collaboration with the Groningen Archives and the University Library; - Discussion-meetings with non-academic stakeholders; - Specific training in scientific writing; - Discussions with research stakeholders; - Individual or small group training sessions with senior lecturers from the Faculty of Arts, Theology and Law; - Final plenary meeting with international guest lecturer and presentation of individual research projects. Each participant will work a final essay which will be presented and discussed during the final plenary meeting. Target group
This summer school is intended for (Research) Master and PhD students in the Humanities, Law and Social Sciences.Students need to have a working knowledge of academic English.

Course aim
The main aim of the summer school Solidarity and Togetherness: Concepts and Practices of Sustainable Citizenship is to involve graduate students in a reflection on how the Western history of civic experience can be employed to promote knowledge of and reasoning on the role of citizens. The participants will be challenged to participate in discussions with senior researchers, policy makers and guest speakers on themes inspired by the newest European focus in humanities and social sciences research, such as the Horizon 2020 theme 'Europe in a changing world: inclusive, innovative and reflective societies'. The summer school will function as a laboratory in which past civic opinions, practices and experiences are just as much studied and analysed in their historical context as deployed to clarify contemporary questions.

2.5 ECTS creditsStudents who complete all assignments and participate in all summer school activities will receive 2,5 EC and a certificate of attendance.
