Alfred Hitchcock's (1899-1980) film art, covering nearly sixty years of work in the medium, is extensive in volume and embedded with sharp philosophical and ethical viewpoints. Hitchcock is one of the greatest inventors of film form in the entire history of cinema.
He was a true cinematic visionary, who directed in German, English and American studios. Hitchcock's art reflects the soul of a modern artist, with a keen dualistic aspect regarding film characters and narrative themes.This course differs from many other approaches to Hitchcock.
It emphasizes the density and meaning of Hitchcock's unique cinematic style. Course features close readings of Hitchcock's films, such as The Lodger (1927), Blackmail (1929), Sabotage (1936), Thirty-Nine Steps (1937), Rebecca (1940), Notorious (1946), Shadow of a Doubt (1946), Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1959), Psycho (1960), The Birds (1962), Marnie (1964), and Frenzy (1971)
