Topics that will be discussed include:
- Entrepreneurship:Entrepreneurship is important for the growth and innovativeness of an economy. We introduce several types of start-ups, such as academic spin-offs and social ventures. We will also focus on the importance of a strategic entrepreneurial orientation, and discuss concepts as effectuation and result-oriented entrepreneurship.
- SMEs and Family Businesses:SMEs play an important role in the creation of wealth in any society. They are responsible for the bulk of employment and constitute by far the largest group of businesses in any country. However, many of these SMEs are stagnant and passive growth and innovation. We will delve deeper into the question how SMEs can create value. Next to this we will focus on a specific sub-set of SMEs, namely family businesses. These types of firms while appearing rather similar to "regular" SMEs have specific advantages, but they also face distinct challenges.
- Corporate Entrepreneurship:How can entrepreneurship be stimulated in (large) corporate ventures. To answer this question we will have closer look at the "intrapreneur" to figure out why entrepreneurship no longer requires the entrepreneur to have his own firm.
- Entrepreneurship in practice: This part of the course will offer the students the opportunity to experience first-hand what it means to be an entrepreneur. During a two-week game several teams will compete against each other to see which teams possesses the most entrepreneurial skills and is able to make the most out of a very limited pool of resources.
