This two-week course introduces the principles, assumptions, strengths, limitations, and applications of the familyof techniques known as structural equation modeling (SEM). Basic SEM techniques, including path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and analysis of full "LISREL" (structural regression) models, will be covered.Familiarity with basic multivariate statistical techniques, including multiple regression and exploratory factoranalysis, is assumed, but higher levels of quantitative knowledge are not required.
The presentation of topics will be conceptually rather than mathematically oriented, and many examples of theapplication of SEM to different kinds of actual research problems are considered. There is a strong emphasis onavoiding common mistakes in SEM. Computer tools are described, and participants will gain hands-on practicewith LISREL, a widely used computer application. Even if participants eventually use a different SEM computertool in their own work, principles learned from working with LISREL generalize to related applications.
Period
01-07-2013 - 12-01-2013 (-24 weeks)
Target group
Course targets; students (usually master and PhD) with basic statistical knowledge and researchers in the social science area; sociology, business, psycology, economics, marketing, social work, political science etc. who would like to learn Structural Equation Modeling.
Course aim
The course introduces participants to the conceptual and methodological foundations of the Comfirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling. The expectation is that, at the end of the course, participants will be able successfully to conduct research using SEM, as well as be prepared to pursue self-directed study in the area.
Credits
15.0 ECTS credits
Students who would like to get 15 ECTS credit should take and pass the exam at the end of the course. Istanbul University will give them a transcript and necessary credit documentations beside of their participation certificates.
