This course offers a variety of lessons in orchestral, solo and ensemble playing, highlighting famous as well as lesser known Roman repertoire by Antonio Vivaldi. The students will work on a variety of topics in historically informed performance practice, receive individual technical instruction and prepare for an evening concert in the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht. Singers are coached in recitatives and arias taken from operas and cantatas, with specific techniques and ornamentations.
The historical backgrounds of the music will be illuminated in lectures by teaching staff members.The courses on August 22-26, plus the possibility of playing in a concert on 27 August. Participants will be selected on the basis of their application, and a further selection process will decide who can participate in the concert on 27 August. Students will receive scores of works that will be studied in advance, as well as relevant background information about the context of the works. Maximum number of participants: 40.Participants receive a passe-partout for free entry to all (not sold-out) Festival events.
Based on the number of applicants for this summer school a selection will be made from the following repertoire list: - large scale sacred music: RV 587, 593, 594, 597, 602a, 603, 610a- small scale sacred music: RV 596, 601, 605, 612, 616, 618, 636, 637, 640- secular vocal music: fragments from the opera Il Giustino RV 717- concertos with wind instruments: RV 90, 95, 556, 572- concertos for strings: 24 concertos by Vivaldi included in the "Manchester part books"

Early music main subject students or young professionals seeking post graduate training and expertise. The course is open to singers, strings, woodwinds and basso continuo instruments.
Course aim
Musicians who are trained in historical performance have gained more insight in the most recent historically motivated approach of Baroque repertoire. Every participant will have learned essential instrumental or vocal skills and rehearsing techniques of ensemble as well as orchestral playing. By studying these techniques in context while being intensively coached, the artistic purposes of a supposedly high baroque mainstream repertoire will be enriched considerably
