The Summer Institute on Sexuality, Culture and Society was founded in 1995. The Summer Institute on Sexuality, Culture and Society at the Graduate School of Social Sciences , Universiteit van Amsterdam, is an intensive four-week summer programme, which focuses on the study of sexuality across cultures and is taught by an international faculty team.

Target group
The Summer Institute is open to students with a focused interest in sexuality research, MA and Ph.D. students, students at one of the Dutch research schools, participants in other International School programmes, and students or professionals from non governmental organisations engaged in AIDS and/or sexuality research.
Students with no previous experience in the field should consider taking an introductory course prior to applying to the Summer Institute.Morning modules are for all students. In the afternoon the course consists of two tracks: one track is designed for students who can indicate a sincere commitment to sexuality research. The other track is specifically for students who have developed a research proposal in the field and are prepared to present it to the group for feedback and criticism.Since 1995 we have had over 300 students from 40 different countries. Twenty-five percent of the participants were professionals working for NGO's. The others had diverse educational backgrounds; in the social sciences (anthropology, sociology, psychology), women's studies, history, public health, or human sexuality studies.
Course aim
The aim of the course is to explore and study the social and cultural dimensions of human sexuality and gain training in areas of sexuality research - both theory and method - not commonly available in other institutions.Every year the Summer Institute invites well-established scholars to teach a special module or give a guest lecture. The faculty is selected on the grounds of their educational and research achievements.The participation of an international multidisciplinary faculty and students from different educational and cultural backgrounds provides a fruitful and challenging atmosphere enjoyed by students and faculty alike.
During seminars, lunches, and weekly "get-togethers," conversations, and activities, informal contacts between the faculty, students, and guest lecturers flourish. The sharing of varied experiences, research, plans of work, and perspectives provide a unique networking opportunity, thereby increasing participants ' knowledge within an international context. In addition, Amsterdam is an ideal location for the Summer Institute. The open atmosphere and small scale of the city is experienced by both western and non-western students as a refreshing stimulant for active discussion of sexuality and culture.
Credits
10.0 ECTS creditsAs a Summer Institute student you will either receive: * a certificate (non-credit) * or both a certificate and a transcript (credit)with an official seal from the Universiteit van Amsterdam. You must complete all requirements for successful completion of the course. For students wishing to obtain credit for the course, writing a paper is one of the requirements.
Students will be judged on class attendance, literature comprehension, and class participation, and for credit students a final written paper (minimum 15- maximum 20 pages).The final paper can be on any subject that relates to the study of sexuality and culture, but should reflect what you have learned in these four weeks of the Summer Institute. Previously written papers may not be submitted. It is obligatory to speak with the supervisor about your paper topic before you begin.
You should present an abstract of your paper, stating topic, purpose, and other relevant details (200 to 400 words) in the first week of the Summer Institute. Do not attempt to write a paper without getting approval and feedback first.When you have completed your paper, please email it to the Summer Institute. Most students do not finish their papers while the SI is in session, but they complete it in the month following the course. If you meet all requirements, you can expect to get full credit for the course. Please submit your paper no later than August 31, 2010.
