Sustainable Global Technologies (SGT) is a multidisciplinary educational programme of Aalto University. The SGT programme aims to increase awareness, education as well as research in the fields of sustainability, development, and technology.The SGT programme organizes a summer course for Master's students in August 2011.
Summer course is mainly aimed for those already holding a Bachelor's degree and preferably have signed in a Master's programme. However, some undergraduate students can also be accepted.The course introduces eco-efficient technologies to reach a sustainable way of living. SGT is a learning studio that allows students to work with factual development cases in the field of energy, waste, commuting, and food. This multidisciplinary course integrates various areas of technology with social and economic aspects.
The SGT Living Lab includes interactive workshops, lectures, and an extensive project work. The lectures introduce various new technologies and research findings that can improve the sustainability of living. The lectures and workshops initiate students to project work including project design, management, scheduling, financing, and reporting. The participants will get a grasp of the dynamics of group work as well as research ethics and methods.
In the group work sessions, the students will participate in real development projects.SGT uses the Aalto University Campus as a Living Lab for planning and testing the outcomes of the course. The Finnish capital, Helsinki, has recently been chosen as World's Design Capital for 2012. Aalto University will co-operate with this project under the theme of Eco-campus and Sustainable Design.On mornings there are short lectures, introductions and presentations by course staff and invited experts. On afternoons the students take part in guided workshops and work with their case in a smaller group. There will be some hands-on tasks and field visits.
Special course cases will deal with subjects as energy efficiency, mobility on campus, environmental criteria, ecological building, food and sustainable waste managementNote that during the course you will have some mornings off and likewise some afternoons we'll work late. Most days we'll be working on Otaniemi campus in Espoo. But we'll also spend few days in central Helsinki. The timetable found on the right is preliminary and subject to change.There will be a pre-course task consisting of 1 A4 essee / description paper and 1 A3 idea poster. We will be in contact with all course participants during May / June regarding the pre-course task.
