The Text and Context Literature Course consists of a carefully planned programme of lectures and seminars. Every day, a guest speaker of established academic reputation will lecture on their particular field of expertise. Speakers in the past have included such distinguished figures as Catherine Belsey, Sir Bernard Crick, David Daiches, Tom Devine, Terry Eagleton, Laura Marcus, Toril Moi, Elaine Showalter, Patricia Waugh, Martin Stannard, Terence Brown, Angela Smith, and Randall Stevenson. After each lecture, students have the opportunity to approach the speakers for further discussion and advice about their own work.
The School 's teaching programme centres upon the two-hour seminar, which follows the lecture four to five times each week. During seminars students explore texts and ideas with each other and their assigned tutor. SUISS tutors are all experienced in university teaching and are experts in their field.The course runs for a total of six weeks, and offers a continuous programme of study throughout that period. Students may choose to come for the full programme, or attend the first, the second or third two-week term or a combination of the modules.
Each term offers a self-contained programme of study: the first term of the Literature Course covers British and Irish Modernism, the second focuses on Scottish Literature from 1900 to the present, whilst the third term investigates British and Irish Contemporary Literature. The School 's programme provides 42 hours of lectures and 56 hours of seminar time. Additional consultancy periods with tutors can also be arranged as required. Every student attending the Summer School receives a Certificate of Attendance if they complete the Course to the satisfaction of the Directors. Students who attend the course for credit will receive a Certificate of Credit from Edinburgh University.

Target group
The School's programme is intensive and flexible. It has much to offer students of various degrees of academic experience. In past years, students who have spent at least two years in undergraduate study in their chosen field have generally gained most from the School. SUISS has always proved a valuable experience for teachers and graduates. In particular those involved in further research have participated in the programme of study while also making use of the extensive library resources available in Edinburgh for their own work.
Course aim
Text and Context provides a stimulating and comprehensive interdisciplinary course examining literature from Britain and Ireland in the context of the major changes and developments in society and culture during the twentieth and twenty-first century. The dynamic and varied character of more than a hundred years of British and Irish literature is examined from the points of view of Scottish, English, Irish and Postcolonial texts, taking into account recent developments in literary theory.
Credits
18.0 ECTS creditsAll three modules of the Literature course are credit-bearing and offer ECTS 6 points each. Credit is available to, although not compulsory for, all students attending any of these modules. SUISS credit is affiliated to the University of Edinburgh degree credit scheme (SCOTCAT) and to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The credit scheme is based on a combination of contact teaching hours, independent study and formal assessment. Credit can be sought at two levels (SCQF8 and SCQF10 of SCOTCAT), equivalent to the levels of junior honours (1-3 years of study) and senior honours (4 or more years of study). This allows SUISS students to pursue the same credit at a level appropriate to the stage of their studies at their home institution. Students studying for credits will also receive a grade, which reflects the quality of their assessments.
