The brain is the most complex and intriguing organ in the human body. It is also the gateway to being human: from the slight movement of a limb to solving complex equations and experiencing emotions; everything ultimately originates in this awe-inspiring organ. Should this organ fail to function, it will impact the very essence of our humanity. Although extremely frightening, it is also the key to one of the most demanding and satisfying professions in the world: neurosurgery.The reality of neurosurgeryFew professions capture the imagination as neurosurgery does. New developments in neurosurgery often make the newspaper: deep brain stimulation for obesity, cortical implants to help the blind, stem cell therapy for the paraplegic, brain-computer interfaces, a 'window to the brain'. Few people, however, understand the nature of a neurosurgeon's activities. Some believe it is restricted to removing the affected areas of the brain; a process limited by the complexity of the organ. What few people realise, however, is that this profession also offers endless possibilities in terms of patient care (using cutting-edge technology) and research (the neurosurgeon is the only doctor that can directly stimulate the brain and study the effects).In this summer course you will have the opportunity to experience the reality of contemporary neurosurgical practice at the Radboud University Medical Center.Course contentNeurosurgery is a rapidly evolving medical subspecialty. The complex nature of the organs it deals with (the brain, spinal cord and its surrounding structures) makes it one of the most technically demanding and challenging specialities in the medical profession. In this course we will examine the practical and theoretical aspects of neurosurgical practice. We will play particular attention to the technological developments and future challenges that exist in this field. Patient-oriented and scientific developments will be presented during seminars that will cover several disciplines within the neurosurgical field (vascular, spinal, oncological, neuromodular, etc.). The course will also include surgical and anatomical demonstrations, ethical aspects of neurosurgical interference and interactive discussions. Topics for future research may also be discussed depending on participant preferences.
