The research institute Tilburg Sustainability Center (TSC) is proud to host the Summer School 'The Law and Economics of EU Emission Trading'. From a dual perspective, TSC's renowned environmental economists and (environmental) law scientists will help you gain in-depth insights into the EU's current and possible future climate policies. The performance of the EU Emission Trading System will be the focal point of the course.

Course aim
The EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) represents the EUs climate policy flagship, and will significantly influence future policy design. This unique summer course considers the EU ETS from the dual perspective of economics and law, and involves top specialists from both Tilburg Law School and Tilburg School of Economics and Management. This twofold approach is opportune since the EU ETS is a heavily regulated market-based system. The primary objective of this course is to understand, assess and model the EUs current and future climate policy, with a particular focus on the performance of the EU ETS. The environmental effectiveness and economic efficiency of the system, or the lack thereof, will be examined both from a theoretical and practical angle. The analysis and discussions also touch upon developments in related policy fields that may influence the performance of the EU ETS, such as energy policy. The course draws upon experiences of the first two trading periods of the EU, and takes a closer look at implementation in selected member states (case studies). In addition, we deal with specific current challenges relating to emission trading, including the interdependency of different policy instruments, incentives for green innovation, competitiveness, enforcement, linkages with non-EU emission trading systems, and back-loading. Theoretical concepts will be confronted with practical considerations by means of Serious Games.

EUR 1950[Convert to USD]The course fee is 2350 with hotel accommodation in Mercure Hotel Tilburg for five nights or 1950 without hotel accommodation. The fee covers tuition, course materials, excursion, 5 lunches, and 2 dinners. The costs of travel to and from Tilburg must be covered separately by the participant.
