A quick glance at the world's developing countries reveals striking differences in the levels of development, and a corresponding variation in the state's contribution to the process of development - ranging from so called predatory states like Mugabe's Zimbabwe, plundering and preying on their own citizenry, to the developmental states of the Asian Tigers, playing a key role in the industrial transformation of their countries.
In this course we will take a closer look at the factors put forward to explain this pattern - both in terms of the institutional foundations of development success and failure, as well as their political origins. Course offered by Department of Political Science, AU.

Course aim
The objectives for this module are:
- To develop further the students' knowledge of the politics of institutions as well as their role in the process of development
- To enable the students to account for and compare the different theories and approaches presented in the course, including identifying their differences/similarities and strengths/weaknesses
- To enable the students to independently apply these theories and approaches on developing countries using comparative analysis- To enable the students to assess the fruitfulness of the subject's theories, methods and their fields of application
Among the competences to be achieved for the student in this course are:- A working knowledge of the origins and effect of developmental institutions in a number of developing countries - The ability to analyse and synthesize critically diverging approaches on the politics developmental success and failure- The ability to do a theoretically structured comparison of selected cases- An understanding of the logic, importance, but also pitfalls of comparative analysis- An ability to reflect critically on the broader implications and dilemmas relating to the politics behind development success and failure- The training and further development of (English) writing skills- The ability to hold in-class presentations that stimulate discussion
