Wimbledon College of Arts, London: 30 June - 04 July 2014On this section of the course we will help to inspire and develop you as a designer providing you with the opportunity to experience one of the top most influential cities for creative practices. Through the design brief you will learn how to extract key information from a given text, allowing you to explore the design possibilities of space, colour, light and texture. You will then develop your own scenic and character ideas to create a visual representation of the text. Through a series of workshops and discussion groups you will learn the basic skills in designing for performance. These will include model making, scale drawing, costume design and research. By the end of the course you will have a collection of work, which communicates your individual interpretation of the text, ready to be further explored in Barcelona. During your time on the course you will be able to take advantage of some of London's most creative centers including a backstage theatre tour and a visit to one of London's top galleries, which will help enhance your understanding and eventual body of design work.ELISAVA, Barcelona: 07 - 11 July 2014On this second part of the course you will take part in an action design process to build a scenography for a play directed by Carlota Subir%F3s and with the guidance of Pilar Calderon and Max Glaenzel. At the end of the course, the play will be performed in one of Barcelona's most alternative and vibrant performance spaces - the Factory of Creation "Nau Ivanow". Through a participatory approach to decision-making in the design process you will acquire a range of skills from space conceptualization to the development of a real set design. In response to a scene played by 2 actors and directed by Subir%F3s, you will be set the challenge of proposing and building a scenography. Some key words like space, colour, light, texture, sound and smell will act as the starting point to create an immersive and ephemeral atmosphere. You will extend your creative boundaries by collaborating with the actors, director and scenographer through an open-action design process. The course will take place on one of the stages and rehearsal areas of Nau Ivanow that will form the base camp until the opening night. The actors and the director will share the space with the participants in a simultaneous creative process. The methodology is based on a workshop format in which both participants and teachers work together throughout the whole process.

This course is ideal for anyone interested in pursuing theatre design. Through a progressive series of workshops that begin in London and conclude in Barcelona, you will respond to a narrative through storyboarding and model making to develop your concept and visually communicate your ideas. You will also have the opportunity to explore and enjoy the vibrant theatre scenes in each city to inform your projects and develop your research.Who Should AttendThis course would be suitable for students with an interest in theatre and stage design wishing to develop their skills and learn more about the theatre scenes in London and Barcelona. This course would be suitable for students studying Design, Architecture, Arts or Theatre Studies.

Course aim
You will have an understanding of the key process involved with set design from the beginning stages of the design brief. You will learn how to gather research, develop ideas into models and sketches and use this work to communicate your design decisions. Your final collection of work will reflect your newfound ability to take the key points from a text and use them to bring your design interpretation to life. Students will have learnt to understanding the specificity of the set design. They will have built and set up a scenography by experiencing the step by step processes through to the final realisation in a short period of time.
