This course covers everything you need to know about speech production disorders in children. Children with speech production disorders form the largest part of a speech therapist's case load. This course is designed to provide a deeper understanding of speech production disorders, differential diagnosis and developing intervention plans. You will be introduced to the latest findings on speech production disorders and intensively practice your skills in transcribing and analyzing children's speech.

Target group
Students in their second, third or fourth year of speech therapy education, or a similar education such as (neuro)linguistics, speech & language pathology, psychology or pedagogy.
Course aim
The student is able to- Describe models of speech sound disorders of typology, levels and characteristics of speech sound disorders.- Describe the universal and language-specific phonological characteristics of their own language.- Describe the normal and deviant phonological developmental patterns in their own language.-Compare the normal and deviant phonological developmental patterns across the languages in the group.-Transcribe phonetically the speech of a child with speech sound disorders.-Perform a phonological analysis of a childs spontaneous speech sample.- Differentiate between types of speech sound disorders, such as articulatory, speech motor, planning and phonological disorders.- Formulate treatment goals for different types of speech sounds disorders.- Describe treatment plans for different types of speech sound disorders in own language.-Support the choices for intervention in an evidence-based way, using relevant literature, speech sound and language data and relevant background information.- Compare treatment options for his/her own language with other languages in the group.
