Risk is an integral part of life. We take, perceive, ignore and experience risks every day. The Utrecht University Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) investigates risks to human health. Our research focuses on risks related to chemical, biological, and physics agents in the environment, the work place and the food chain.

During this two-week residential summer school students will be introduced to the three approaches used in risk assessment: exposure assessment, toxicology (the science of poisons) and epidemiology (the science of public health). Students attend a series of lecture courses at an advanced undergraduate level. Students also participate in exercises, case studies and practical sessions under the guidance of a range of staff.

Target group
Advanced bachelors/ beginning masters with a strong background in biology, biomedical or environmental sciences and an interest in toxicology and environmental health as well as a good proficiency in English. Applicants should go through a selection procedure. (Maximum number of participants: 25).

Course aim
To give students an introduction to the field of risk assessment in toxicology and environmental health. At the end of the course participants will have acquired basic knowledge and skills in environmental health risk assessment.
