The course analyses a variety of transitional justice mechanisms, from amnesties and restorative rituals to truth commissions and formal trials, by situating them in their historical and normative context and assessing their empirical expressions. As such, the course will engage critically with the paradigms, developments and major debates concerning justice while examining their articulation in particular cases.
Furthermore, as the politics of justice has international and local dimensions, the course will draw on approaches from international and comparative political studies to understand the subject. Course offered by Department of Political Science, AU.

The objectives for this module are:
- To develop students' knowledge of prevailing transitional justice mechanisms and the political and moral issues they address and engender
- To enable students to understand and discuss the normative and empirical implications of the different strategies for dealing with a nation's past
- To enable students to advance a critical analysis of the politics of justice
