UltrasoundUltrasound has become a common tool for diagnostic and interventional procedures in anaesthesia and has replaced the use of non-converted sound (percussion and auscultation) in the physical examination of the patient. This is known as Point-of-Care (POC) ultrasound. POC ultrasound technology has been integrated into an array of anaesthetic procedures for inpatient and outpatient care of adults and children, including emergency care, intensive care and pain therapy. The use of ultrasonography will soon be incorporated into other subspecialties such as general medicine, emergency medicine and surgery. Course objectivesThis course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the use of ultrasonography for ultrasound-guided vascular access, ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia for perioperative pain relief and ultrasound in trauma (including the FAST-protocol). It will also cover focused cardiac ultrasound examination and ultrasound physics. Practical workPractical scanning skills will be practiced on live models, while needle-handling techniques will be practiced on dummies. All workshops will be carried out with a maximum offive participants per workstation. Demonstrations of the clinical applications will be provided using real patients in operating theatres in both the hospital and the intensive care unit.Locations: Radboud university medical center & Volkel military airbaseThe course is offered by the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen. The ultrasound in trauma lectures and workshops will be provided at the Volkel military airbase, where the HEMS trauma helicopter is located. The instructors are all skilled experts active in the field of clinical ultrasound.

Target group
This course was designed for medical students, residents-in-training for anaesthesia, emergency medicine, surgery or critical care, and for physician's assistants.

Course aim
After this course you will be able to:1. Appreciate the use of ultrasonography in the physical examination of the patient2. Obtain a basic knowledge of ultrasound physics and equipment3. Identify peripheral nerves and understand the different needling techniques used to effectively block these nerves4. Identify the lumbar spine and pinpoint the optimal window for needle insertion during a spinal puncture5. Diagnose and exclude pleural effusion, pulmonary oedema and pneumothorax6. Perform a systematic sonographic examination for detecting free fluid in the pleural cavities, pericardial sac and abdomen7. Obtain basic imaging views for right and left ventricular function in order to guide cardiopulmonary optimization
