Urban Youth and Social Acceleration

The course explores youth dynamics by localising them in urban settings and looking at the ways they are articulated within local societies and global processes at large. An embedded analysis of youth practices is here favored, looking at how the young negotiate modernity and configure social order and cultural significance.

Target group
M.A. and PhD students who are interested in youth cultures, urban studies, and social acceleration are interested to participate in the course. As English is the language of instruction at the summer school, participants should have at least an intermediate level of English. Students are expected to do some preparatory reading in order to participate in the seminars and workshops. They also have an option (not compulsory) to present their own research during student colloquia.

Course aim
The objective of this summer school course is to contribute to international discussions on youth negotiations of late-modern processes. Through a series of readings, work assignments and seminar discussions, the summer school course will provide analytical tools to examine how youth practices are socially embedded. By the end of the program, students will have gained a solid theoretical framework as well as access to diverse case studies. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to present their own ongoing work, getting feedback from established researchers, activists and peer students.
