Urban public spaces are constantly changing and highly contested territories. The fields of action that have to be considered when analysing urban public spaces range from the impact of global trends like neoliberalism on new urban policies, to everyday appropriations at the local level. The relationship between macro trends and micro scale actions manifests itself in ongoing transition processes, located in urban public spaces which are both spaces of differences and arenas of interaction.rnrnThese central issues for urban planning and development are the key questions of the Vienna Summer School in Urban Studies 2014:rnrn1) Who has a right to the city and the production and consumption of its public spaces?rn2) Who is excluded from this right?

Target group
The interdisciplinary approach aims to provide a multi-perspective analysis and mutual learning processes for and with masters and PhD students dealing with public spaces from adjacent disciplines.rnrnWe invite masters and PhD students from disciplines such as geography, sociology, anthropology, history, architecture, landscape architecture, and media & arts, who are interested in the topic of public space focusing on the production and consumption perspective within this research field. Participants will gain a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of public spaces in transition and the actors involved in transitional processes.rnrnPrerequisites: Advanced master studies or early PhD studies; preparatory work (reading and questions)

Course aim
The Vienna Summer School in Urban Studies will help students to engage with the qualities, functions, and spatial characteristics of urban public spaces in an international context and seek to analyse the daily appropriations and negotiations within urban public spaces, by both producers and consumers, which result in specific symbolic meanings being generated. We will also challenge our own appropriation strategies and reflect upon their social and spatial consequences.
