The Viking Age (c. 700 - 1050 AD) stands as an essentially formative period of European history. With their discovery and colonization ofIceland, Greenland and America the Vikings expanded the borders of the known world.
At the same time, the societies in the Viking homelands (Denmark,Norway and Sweden) went through a process of fundamental transformations, leading to the development of important places and institutions. In this way, the Vikings left their mark all over Europe and beyond, and contributed to shaping the world that we are living in today, both in Scandinavia and most of Europe.

Course aim
In the evaluation of exam performance, emphasis is placed on the extent to which the student:
1) Has thorough knowledge of the given key course material.
2) Is able to identify and present an analysis of an issue based on the given key course material.
3) Is able to critically assess key theses in a problem complex.
4) Is able to display critical assessment of sources in relation to apparent data patterns and evaluate the consequences for the interpretation given.

Course fee
EUR 0: Students on a bilateral exchange programme do not have to pay. Freemovers are obliged to pay participation fees while tuition fees only apply to freemovers from countries outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
