The emergence of modern India as an economic powerhouse, a leader in science and technology and an influential player in global politics invites an analytical understanding of why India is what it is today, its new role in a globalizing world and its strengthening partnership with all major powers.

India compels attention as the world's largest functioning democracy, which has nurtured a pluralistic society and has succeeded in transforming potential fault lines of religion, language and ethnicity into bonds that unite the nation. India thus demonstrates that democracy and development are not either/or choices, but processes that can supplement each other.The success and sustainability of its economic reforms, its young demographic profile together with its skilled human resources makes India an exciting destination for business, investment and innovation for entrepreneurs across the globe.However, future economic and social challenges before India remain daunting.

Socio-economic transformation of diverse sections of its society in an equitable and inclusive manner would remain the primary objective of India.India is a key player in the ongoing multilateral negotiations on major global issues, namely trade, climate change, energy security and global security issues, particularly international terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

A major focus of the course will be on India's economic transformation, its growth story and knowledge economy. The regulatory framework of trade and investment will be covered.India's increased international influence and strategic engagement with major powers particularly US, EU, China, Russia, Japan and its neighbors will be examined. India's stance on the vital global issues facing the international community will be explained. Finally the course will offer a glimpse of todays' vibrant cultural scene, creative arts, literature and entertainment industry especially Bollywood as well as Indian cuisine.

Course aim
The course is aimed at presenting an insight into the political, economic and social dynamics of contemporary India. It will offer a critical understanding of Indian government and politics, institutional framework of Indian democracy and challenges of nation building and governance. The active role of judiciary, media and civil society and socio-cultural issues concerning caste and empowerment of women will be examined.
